The “boy king” Tutankhamun is known the world over, but what of Tutankhaten, as he was originally called and was known for a time, even after his accession to the throne of Egypt?Specialists dispute not only the identity of his parents, but also the very meaning of the name he was given at birth. This lecture explores the identity of Tutankhaten, the objects that document his life, the significance of the decision to alter his name to Tutankhamun, and the political and religious ramifications of this event.
