ABSTRACT: 

The Cangdong Village Project was developed to investigate the material practices of Cangdong Village residents during the Late Qing Dynasty (1875-1912) and Early Republic Period (1912-1927).

The project is a transnational, interdisciplinary partnership of researchers from both China and the United States, including historians, architectural historians, archaeologists, folklife specialists, botanists, and zoologists.

This project conducted surface studies of Cangdong Village in December 2016. Based on these studies, we selected four locations for subsurface testing in December 2017. The test units encountered deposits of household materials from the Late Qing Dynasty (1875–1912) and early Republic Period (1912–1941). Then we analyzed these artifacts to better understand how village residents lived during these periods and how their lives were influenced by migration. The findings of the Cangdong Village Project are also being used by researchers in the United States to understand the cultural backgrounds of 19th century Chinese migrants.
