Call for Submissions: How to Submit

Are you interested in submitting content for In Situ? If so, see the submission guidelines below!

Whether you’re an undergraduate student, graduate researcher, postdoc, or faculty member, everyone is welcome to submit. The content we are seeking falls into a few categories:

1. Articles (1,000–1,500 words): Write about your current research, a recent project, or anything you’ve been working on that relates to archaeology. Feel free to include up to 8 images (though we may not use them all). If you'd like to see past examples, browse our In Situ archive.

2. Field Notes (50–200 words): Send a short reflection on your fieldwork — where you went, what you studied, and what stood out. Include one photo from your time in the field.

3. Photo Contest: Submit your best archaeology-related photo, whether taken in the field, the lab, or elsewhere. Selected images will appear in our photo gallery!

4. Publication Highlights: If you’ve published an archaeological paper recently, send us the citation, a short, public-friendly abstract, and one image to go with it.

5. News and Announcements: Have an award, event, or other update to share? We’d love to include it! Please attach one image if possible.

We also invite faculty members to nominate outstanding student work in the classroom — short essays, object biographies, videos, podcasts, or storymaps — that we might feature in In Situ or on our website.

How to submit: Please send your submissions (or any questions) to sca@fas.harvard.edu. Submission deadlines are rolling, but if you would like your work considered for our print edition of In Situ we encourage you to submit your work by one of our three soft deadlines: November 14, February 6, and April 3.
