------------ From: Quilter, Jeffrey Sent: Thursday, August 15, 2013 9:05 PM To: Urton, Gary; Lamberg-Karlovsky, C.; Fash, William; Manuelian, Peter; Meadow, Richard; David Carrasco; Flad, Rowan; Ur, Jason; Liebmann, Matthew Subject: Costa Rica Workshop Advance Notice Dear Colleagues, I hope that your summers have gone well. I am writing this note to let you know that the Peabody Museum will be holding the first of what I hope will be a series of workshops (1 or 2 per year) focusing on Peabody Museum collections on October 15 – 17. This event is being co-sponsored and supported by the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies. The concept of the workshops is to bring a small number of specialists to focus their attentions on objects in the Peabody to both inform the museum about its collections and to serve as a basis for discussions in archaeology and Anthropology, in general. A series of nested group activities will occur over the three days of the workshop to be ever-more inclusive for interested parties at Harvard as the event proceeds. Details of the event are still being finalized but, currently, a talk will be given during the usual Wednesday lunchtime time period and more general presentations will be made on Thursday, possibly including an afternoon lecture. The external participants for this meeting are Francisco Corrales of the National Museum of Costa Rica, John Hoopes (PhD, Harvard '87), and R. Jeffrey Frost. Details of the meeting will be finalized in early September. If you are interested in attending the workshops that will deal with collections, directly, or have students who you believe may have a special interest, please do let me know, as space will be limited in the Annex. I note that Colin McEwan, new Director of Pre-Columbian Studies at Dumbarton Oaks, and at least one other person from there will also be in attendance. I will send more details for those responding to this email and as desired when they are available.
